Erectile dysfunction (ED) is one of the most common health problems in men, yet is rarely discussed. More than 30 million men in the US are affected, especially those who are 65 and older.
ED occurs when a man is unable to get and keep an erection firm enough to engage in sexual activity through orgasm. While ED is often referred to as “impotence,” it doesn’t mean that the desire to have sex is nonexistent. Oftentimes, ED is a sign of an underlying health condition, such as diabetes or heart disease.
No matter the reason, having ED can be embarrassing and frustrating for a man and his sexual partner. But the good news is most causes of ED are treatable and help for ED is really just a doctor’s visit away.
What to Expect from Your Doctor
When you visit your urologist for ED, expect a full evaluation. Your doctor will perform a number of tests including bloodwork to assess your testosterone level, as well as check for hypertension, lipid disorders, and diabetes. He will discuss lifestyle choices: Do you smoke? What medications are you taking? Do you abuse alcohol? He may ask if you have suffered a stressful event, such as loss of a job or loved one, or have been injured. He will ensure that the blood flow is reaching the penis. Each of these varied factors can play a keen role in ED.
If no medical reasons can be identified for your ED, a doctor may recommend lifestyle changes, such as eating healthier, getting more rest, avoiding or managing stressors, exercising, and eliminating drugs, tobacco, and alcohol.
If medical treatments are necessary, your doctor may recommend:
· Oral medications such as Viagra® or Cialis®
· Injections or implants
· Penile prosthesis or use of external vacuum erection devices
When to See Your Doctor
Whether due to exhaustion, too much alcohol, stress on the job, or concerns at work, sometimes dysfunction can be a part of life. However, if you have experienced premature ejaculation or other performance issues, have a known condition – such as diabetes – that might be associated with ED, or are experiencing additional symptoms with ED, you may want to see your doctor.
Maintaining a good relationship with your urologist is a good first step to treating or overcoming your ED. Urologists have seen it all and there are few, if any, questions that they can’t answer when it comes to this very personal and sensitive topic.
