Testosterone is the male hormone responsible for muscle and bone mass, secondary sex characteristics and of course, libido and sexual performance. If you are not feeling as virile as you once did, testosterone replacement may be a helpful solution. Here is what to consider if low T impacts your life.
Symptoms of Low T
Also called hypogonadism, low testosterone can begin for men as early as their thirties. While reduced hormonal levels happen simply as a result of aging, more pronounced symptoms may indicate a health problem, such as low pituitary gland function or a complication with the physiology or structure of the testicles. Both problems can result in lowered levels of testosterone.
Symptoms which should be further evaluated by a urologist and men’s health specialist include:
- Persistent fatigue
- Irritability
- Sadness, depression, and lack of motivation
- Brain fog (poor concentration and cognition)
- Reduced muscle and/or bone mass
- Lower libido, fewer spontaneous erections, and impaired sexual function (erectile dysfunction and infertility)
- Reduced production of red blood cells
Your physician will do a complete physical assessment, including examination of your genitals, and also discuss your medical, surgical and medication history. They will also complete a review of lifestyle habits, such as smoking, diet and exercise, as they are important pieces of the
diagnostic process. Additionally, your doctor will take a blood draw (sometimes two separated in time) to determine how much circulating testosterone you actually have.
When to Consider Testosterone Replacement Therapy
Most men with symptoms of low testosterone seek professional counsel and treatment when their sexual function becomes impaired to a noticeable degree. As such, hormone replacement therapy is often suggested as it adequately raises testosterone levels with minimal complications.
However, other health issues, such as fatigue or depression, may be more persistent regardless of a hormonal boost. As such, men and their healthcare providers should look closely at modifications in exercise habits, weight loss, diet, tobacco, and alcohol usage and more to reduce other adverse signs and symptoms. Reducing job and relationship stressors and finding effective ways to relax are helpful as well.
If you do begin a monitored program of testosterone supplementation, your doctor may recommend testosterone injection therapy, implantable, slow- release pellets, topical testosterone gel or other prescription medications.
Then, your urologist will continue to follow your testosterone blood levels and your symptoms to adjust your treatment plan as needed.
While it may help some men experiencing symptoms of low T, supplementing testosterone is not necessary, or recommended, for the slight declines in hormone levels which are caused by aging.
