Here are some basic questions which may come up during your appointment that will help your doctor determine whether you have ED:
- How often do you have difficulty getting and keeping an erection?
- Are you able to maintain an erection during intercourse?

Medical Tests to Determine Erectile Dysfunction
ED can be caused by a variety of issues, and no single factor can determine whether you have the condition. Your urologist will use a series of tools to come to a diagnosis. Here are some ways doctors test for ED:
- Physical Exam – The doctor will perform one or more tests to determine whether you have good nerve sensation and for any apparent issues.
- Psychological Exam – The doctor will ask you questions about how you feel, how your personal life and work life are going, as well as any other psychological issues that may be affecting you.
- Blood Test – A blood test can check for underlying health conditions that may be causing or exacerbating your ED symptoms. They include diabetes, low testosterone levels, and heart disease.
- Urinalysis – A urine test can help find signs of diabetes or other health conditions that could be playing a role.
Treatment for ED
Based on the results of the medical tests, physical exam, and psychological exam, your doctor will determine whether you have ED or something else whose side effects include ED. If you do have ED, your doctor will discuss treatment options with you to help manage the condition.
Your doctor will prescribe treatments based on the severity of your ED and the results you desire. Treatments and therapies include oral medications, vacuum erection devices, penile injection therapy, intra-urethral suppositories, and penile implants. Treatment will also likely include lifestyle changes, such as losing weight, exercising, and maintaining a healthy diet.
