Many of us dread undergoing surgery, particularly because it is usually associated with a long recovery time, large incisions, and a number of risks. If your doctor has told you that going under the knife is the only way to go for your genitourinary issue, it’s natural to want to know if there’s ever a minimally invasive way they can carry out the surgery.
Below, you’ll learn about a few of the common minimally invasive surgeries performed by our board-certified urological surgeon and men’s health expert here at Ironwood Urology, Dr. Desiderio Avila, Jr.
Laser Prostatectomy
This is a procedure Dr. Avila may recommend if you’re experiencing severe symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia/ BPH (prostate enlargement) that are resistant to conservative treatment.
During a laser prostatectomy procedure, Dr. Avila inserts a cystoscope, which is a thin and flexible tube with a camera and light attached to its tip, into your urethra. Once Dr. Avila has made sure the cystoscope is where it’s supposed to be, he then passes a laser fiber through it. Dr. Avila then activates the laser fiber to deliver several bursts of energy and vaporize the prostate tissue that is causing the blockage and shrink the gland. The heat coming from the laser also seals the blood vessels, thereby reducing your risk for bleeding.
No-Needle, No-Scalpel Vasectomy (NSV)
The traditional technique involves a urological surgeon making one or two small incisions in your scrotum to gain access to your vas deferens to sever it and close the incisions with stitches or another method.
The NSV, on the other hand, is a technique in which Dr. Avila creates a tiny hole through the skin of your scrotal sac using a special instrument called a hemostat and closes the site using mild electrical impulse, clips, or simply tie the ends of the vas.
Vasectomy Reversal
If you’re contemplating undergoing a vasectomy reversal, you have two options: vas-to-testicle bypass surgery (vasoepididymostomy) and vas-to-vas reconstruction (vasovasostomy). To determine which technique is appropriate for you, Dr. Avila will get a sample of your semen to assess its quality and check for the presence of sperm.
Both vasectomy reversal procedures are performed on an outpatient basis, involve stitches that are finer than human hair, and have the same goal, which is to put your vas deferens back together and restore the flow of your semen.
