Erectile dysfunction (ED)— the dreaded thing no man ever wants to experience or admit he struggles with.
If you’re starting to notice that ED is becoming a chronic problem, know that there’s hope and that all it takes is to consult a urologist, who specializes in men’s health, to get to the root of your problem and devise an appropriate treatment plan.
Let’s explore the different treatment options available for erectile dysfunction and learn when your urologist might recommend surgery for your condition.
Common Available Treatments for Erectile Dysfunction
After a thorough evaluation, your urologist will likely first fully explore all conservative interventions to attempt to reverse erectile dysfunction. Your treatment plan could include any of the following approaches:
o Hormone replacement therapy– Your urologist may recommend this if they determine that your ED is caused by low testosterone levels.
o Oral prescription medications (e.g., Viagra or Cialis) – This option helps reverse erectile dysfunction by boosting the effects of nitric oxide, a natural substance your body produces that relaxes penile muscles.
o External vacuum device– This mimics rapid, repetitive manual penile stimulations to achieve erection.
o Penile injections or suppositories- These improve blood flow to the penis and, consequently, stimulate erection.
When Is Penile Implant Surgery Recommended?
If an extensive course of conservative treatment fails to reverse your problem, your urologist may resort to penile implant surgery to address it altogether.
A penile implant consists of a pump, reservoir, and two cylinders. The cylinders are installed in the shaft of your penis and connected by tubing to a separate fluid reservoir. Whenever you need an erection, all you have to do is activate the pump sitting between your testicles. The pump then sends fluid from the reservoir, which is implanted in your lower abdomen. Activating the pump consequently inflates the cylinders. After sex, you can simply use the deflation valve at the base of the pump to send the fluid back to the reservoir.
In general, a penile implant surgery is a safe and well-tolerated procedure, and it yields high satisfaction rates for its discreetness and effectiveness.
