A penile prosthesis is a surgically implanted device used in reversing the limitations associated with persistent erectile dysfunction (ED).

How an Inflatable Penile Prosthesis Works
An inflatable penile prosthesis is referred to as three-piece inflatable penile prosthesis as it has three different components, each of which has its unique function. An IPP consists of:
o Two inflatable cylinders, which are inserted into the shaft of the penis;
o A fluid reservoir, which is placed under the lower abdominal muscles;
o A pump bulb, which is placed under the loose skin of the scrotum (the bag of skin that holds the testicles.
The pump is designed to inflate and deflate the cylinders. To inflate your penile prosthesis, you have to press on the pump, which then transfers fluid from the reservoir to the cylinders. When the cylinders get filled with fluid, the penis then becomes firm and engorged, resembling natural erection. To deflate your device, you need to press the deflation valve of the pump located at its base, which then drains the fluid back to the reservoir.
Why It’s Done and Preferred
Penile prosthesis implantation is an irreversible procedure and is only recommended when there is a clear medical cause for erectile dysfunction (such as Peyronie’s disease, a condition that causes curved, painful erections), and when it does not respond to other types of treatment.
IPPs have demonstrable advantages over other ED treatment types and approaches, some of which are as follows:
o They have better cosmetic result.
o They are inconspicuous- they can be concealed when an erection is not desired.
o They create firmer, more natural-feeling and -appearing erections.
o They are easy to use.
o They don’t alter or interfere with a man’s ability to ejaculate or reach orgasm.
Newer models of inflatable penile prostheses, which have cylinders that may increase the length in addition to penile girth and rigidity, have now emerged to optimize comfort and allow for effective penetration.
As with any type of surgery, penile prosthesis implantation does have its own inherent risks, albeit rare. Scar tissue formation, implant problems, and infection are some of the known risks associated with penile implant surgery.
